We are committed to patient confidentiality. Any personal or health information that is collected directly from you or from records obtained will be stored securely. We use a password protected electronic medical record, Accuro, where this information is kept. The sharing of your personal and health information is only done in your benefit and is kept within your circle of care (ex. Communicating with your primary care provider and other specialists involved in your care). Exceptions include situations where the informed consent of the patient has been obtained for disclosure or as provided for by law.
All staff and physicians at Willow Obstetrics and Gynecology sign a confidentiality agreement. We are committed to continued education and quality improvement in regards to patient privacy and the duty of confidentiality.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding the protection of your privacy at our office, please address your concerns with your physician.
Willow Obstetrics and Gynecology is a safe space for our staff and our patients. We value diversity and recognize the right individuals have for respect without bias due to anything that makes a person unique. Our office has a zero-tolerance policy regarding harassment, and abusive, threatening, or violent behaviour.
A physical exam is important and is often recommended to complete a patient’s assessment. This will be explained to you and any procedures recommended. It is your choice to have an examination and procedures performed.
During a physical examination you can withdraw consent at any point by voicing that you are no longer comfortable to proceed.
A chaperone (female member of our staff) is available to be in the room during your examination if this is what you would prefer. Please let us know and we are happy to request their attendance before proceeding with the exam.
We often have medical learners with us (medical students and residents in Family Medicine and Ob/Gyn). They are learning examination skills through observation and practice and we will always ask you if you are comfortable with their observation or participation before your exam. It is your right to refuse this, and your care will not be compromised in any way.
Climate change affects the health and well being of our patients in Northern BC. Many determinants of health including disease, mental health, housing, income, access to health services and physical environments are negatively impacted by climate change.
Greenhouse gas emissions are a metric to assess how an organization, sector or country contributes to climate change. The health care system in Canada is responsible for 4.6% of Canada’s total greenhouse gas emissions (1).
At Willow Obstetrics and Gynecology we continue to try and reduce our carbon footprint and become more sustainable in our practice. We recognize that we contribute to climate change, and therefore to negative health impacts on our patients. We are phasing out disposables, using telehealth and thereby reducing travel to and from our office, and strive to use best practices, guidelines and evidence based medicine to avoid investigations and treatment that are unnecessary and do not provide benefit to our patients.
Akin to becoming more sustainable, is a having an awareness of the benefits that spending in time with nature can have on our health. There is a body of literature supporting the health benefits of spending time in nature, as well as spurring an awareness and desire to preserve it. Whether a riverside walk, reading in a park, or going on a multi-day trekking adventure, spending time in nature has many health benefits. Your physician may discuss this with you as a tool to improve your health. More information can be found at the website below.

Countdown on Climate Change Briefing for Canadian Policy Makers, December 2019
Our office is taking precautions to minimize the risk of transmission of COVID-19. We follow guidance provided by the BC Centre for Disease Control.
Your doctor may recommend a virtual or telephone initial visit or follow up to minimize contact if it is appropriate. Unfortunately, virtual and telephone visits are not suitable for all patients as we may have to perform a physical examination.
If an in-person visit is recommended, we ask that you perform a self check prior to your visit. Please do not come into the office if you have any new or worsening symptoms of COVID-19 or are required to self-isolate. Instead, please phone the office to arrange to meet virtually or reschedule your visit. Symptoms of concern include:
No visitors are allowed into the office at this time (unless necessary to facilitate the patient’s visit). Please note that anyone entering the office is required to wear a mask in accordance with the Provincial Mask Use in Health Care Settings Policy (BCCDC). If you do not have a mask with you, we will provide you with one. You should also practice proper hand hygiene and sanitize your hands upon arrival (hand sanitizer is located at the entrance). Maintain a distance of 2 meters/6 feet from others whenever possible.
All staff are required to perform a daily health check and are required to wear a medical grade mask in any common areas and maintain a distance of 2m/6 ft wherever possible from other people. Proper hand hygiene is mandatory.
If there is a second missed appointment, your referring care provider will be notified that we have not been able to see you and asked to either resend or redirect the referral if it is still required.
Patients who arrive late for appointments including telehealth and phone appointments may not be able to be accommodated on the same day and may have to rebook.
Every effort is made to keep the information posted on this website accurate and updated. Information found in the common conditions section is intended to provide a basic overview and helpful resources for patients referred to our clinic. This information should never replace your individualized care plans discussed with your physician.
